Settings: Units of Measure

What You'll Learn

  • Where to find and change unit-of-measure settings in the measureQuick app
  • Which unit options are available for temperature, pressure, airflow, capacity, and other measurements
  • How changing units affects live readings, reports, and saved data
  • Joe Medosch's recommended defaults for US-market technicians
  • How company administrators can lock or unlock unit settings for their team

What You'll Need

  • Device: iPhone (iOS 15+) or Android phone/tablet (Android 10+) with measureQuick installed
  • App version: v3.5 or later
  • Account: A measureQuick account (see Installing the measureQuick App)
  • Time: 5 minutes to review and adjust settings

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Open the Units of Measure Settings

  1. Open the measureQuick app.
  2. Tap the Settings gear icon (bottom navigation bar or side menu, depending on your device).
  3. Scroll to the Units of Measure section.

All unit preferences are grouped in this section. Each measurement type has its own selector with two or more options.

Step 2: Configure Temperature Units

Tap Temperature to choose between:

  • Fahrenheit (default) - US market standard
  • Celsius - Used in Canada, international markets

This setting controls every temperature reading in the app: return air, supply air, outdoor ambient, liquid line, suction line, discharge, and all other temperature fields. Reports generated after changing this setting will display temperatures in the selected unit.

Joe Medosch's recommendation: Fahrenheit for US-market technicians.

Step 3: Configure Pressure Units

measureQuick provides separate pressure unit selectors for the condenser (high side) and evaporator (low side). Both offer the same options:

Pressure Condenser and Pressure Evaporator:

  • PSIG (default) - US market standard
  • bar - Common in European markets
  • kPa - SI unit, used in some international contexts

Changing pressure units affects all live pressure readings from connected gauges, the refrigerant diagnostic calculations display, and pressure values on reports.

Joe Medosch's recommendation: PSIG for both condenser and evaporator.

Step 4: Configure Static Pressure Units

Tap Static Pressure to choose between:

  • inH2O (default) - Inches of water column; US industry standard for duct static pressure
  • Pa (Pascals) - SI unit

Static pressure readings from connected manometers display in the selected unit. The pass/fail thresholds for total external static pressure (TESP) adjust automatically to match your chosen unit.

Joe Medosch's recommendation: inH2O.

Step 5: Configure Airflow Units

Tap Airflow to choose between:

  • SCFM (default) - Standard cubic feet per minute. Altitude-corrected for more accurate readings at elevation.
  • CFM - Actual cubic feet per minute. Not altitude-corrected.
  • L/s - Liters per second. SI unit.

SCFM is the default because it normalizes airflow readings to standard atmospheric conditions. If you work at elevations above 2,000 feet, SCFM provides a more accurate comparison to manufacturer specifications.

Joe Medosch's recommendation: SCFM (altitude-corrected, more accurate).

Step 6: Configure Remaining Units

The following units can also be configured:

Setting Options Default Joe Medosch Recommendation
Capacity Btu/h, kW, tons Btu/h Btu/h
Efficiency EER, EER2, COP EER EER
Energy Ratings SEER, SEER2 SEER SEER2 (current DOE standard)
Gas Meter Dial ft3, m3 ft3 ft3
Air Moisture Indicators Wet Bulb, Dew Point Wet Bulb Wet Bulb
Weight lbs, kg lbs lbs
Rough Vacuum inHg, microns, Pa, mbar microns microns

One setting worth noting: Energy Ratings defaults to SEER but Joe Medosch recommends switching to SEER2, which is the current DOE testing standard effective January 2023. If your company works with newer equipment rated under SEER2, this setting ensures the app displays efficiency ratings in the same standard as the equipment nameplate.

Company-Wide Unit Settings (Administrators)

Company administrators (Service Manager, Company Admin, or Administrative roles) can manage unit settings across all technicians from the Company-Wide Settings section.

  1. Tap Settings and scroll to Company-Wide Settings (visible only to admin roles).
  2. Toggle the Units of Measure section lock ON or OFF.
  3. When locked, technicians see "[Managed by Company]" and cannot change unit settings.

Company-Wide Settings can also be managed from cloud.measurequick.com > Settings > Company-Wide Settings.

Joe Medosch's recommendation: Leave Units of Measure unlocked. Technicians should choose their preferred units. Unlike report settings, unit preferences are a matter of individual comfort and do not affect data quality.

Tips & Common Issues

I changed my units but old reports still show the previous units

Reports that were already generated and saved retain the units they were created with. Only new reports generated after the change reflect the updated unit preference. If you need to regenerate a report in updated units, open the project and generate a new report.

SCFM vs. CFM - which should I use?

Use SCFM unless you have a specific reason to use CFM. SCFM adjusts for altitude and atmospheric conditions, making your airflow readings comparable to manufacturer specifications regardless of your job site elevation. At sea level, SCFM and CFM are nearly identical.

SEER vs. SEER2 - when does it matter?

Equipment manufactured after January 1, 2023, is rated under the SEER2 standard. If you primarily work on newer equipment, set Energy Ratings to SEER2 so the app's efficiency calculations align with the nameplate rating. For older equipment, SEER is still appropriate.

My units reset after logging out

Unit preferences are stored with your account profile. If you log out and log back in, your settings should persist. If they reset, tap Settings > mQ Account > Refresh Account Info to re-sync your profile from the server.
