Bluetooth Troubleshooting: Android Permissions & Probe Connectivity

Bluetooth Troubleshooting: Android Permissions & Probe Connectivity

Quick Fix: Android Permissions

Most Bluetooth problems on Android are caused by missing permissions. Check all three before doing anything else.

  • Location - Settings > Location - must be ON (system-wide)
  • measureQuick Location - Settings > Apps > measureQuick > Permissions > Location - set to "Allow while using the app"
  • Nearby Devices (Android 12+) - Settings > Apps > measureQuick > Permissions > Nearby devices - set to Allow

Why Location? Android requires Location for Bluetooth Low Energy scanning. This is an Android OS requirement, not a measureQuick setting. If Location is off, the app cannot find any probes.

After an OS update: Android may reset permissions during major updates. If probes that previously worked stop appearing, re-check all three permissions above.

Quick Fix: iOS Permissions

  • Bluetooth - Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth > measureQuick - must be ON
  • Location Services - Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > measureQuick - set to "While Using the App"
  • Background App Refresh - Settings > General > Background App Refresh > measureQuick - must be ON

Probes Not Showing Up

Work through these in order. Stop when the probe appears.

  1. Check permissions (lists above).
  2. Confirm the probe is powered on and not in sleep mode.
  3. Check if another phone is connected. BLE probes connect to one device at a time. If a coworker is connected, the probe is invisible to your phone.
  4. Move within 10 feet of the probe.
  5. Power-cycle the probe. Off, wait 5 seconds, on.
  6. Force-close and reopen measureQuick.
  7. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in phone settings.
  8. Clear app cache (Android): Settings > Apps > measureQuick > Storage > Clear Cache.
  9. Restart your phone. This clears the Bluetooth stack.

For a shorter walkthrough focused on the permissions fix, see Probes Not Showing Up in the Toolbox.

Probes Disappeared After Reinstalling the App

Reinstalling measureQuick clears all stored probe pairings. To reconnect:

  1. Open measureQuick and go to the test screen or Toolbox.
  2. Power-cycle each probe (off, wait 5 seconds, on).
  3. The app will rediscover and reconnect probes automatically.
  4. If a probe does not appear, its internal pairing list may be full. Use the manufacturer app (Fieldpiece Job Link, Testo Smart, etc.) to clear paired devices, then retry.

Connection Drops During a Test

  • Low battery is the most common cause. Replace or recharge probe batteries.
  • Battery optimization (Android): Go to Settings > Apps > measureQuick > Battery and set to "Unrestricted." Samsung devices: also check Device care > Battery > Background usage limits.
  • Range: BLE range varies by probe. If you walk away from indoor probes to check the outdoor unit, use the Hold button to freeze readings before leaving BLE range.
  • Too many probes: Some phones struggle with 7+ simultaneous BLE connections. Disconnect tools you are not actively using.

Probe Connected but No Data

  • Make sure the probe display shows a live reading (not a sleep or error screen).
  • Check channel assignment in the Toolbox. Tap the probe and reassign if needed.
  • Update probe firmware via the manufacturer companion app.
  • Update measureQuick to the latest version.

Device Compatibility

measureQuick requires:

  • iOS: iPhone or iPad running iOS 15.0 or later
  • Android: Android 10 or later with Bluetooth Low Energy support

Older devices or budget tablets may lack BLE hardware. If a specific probe model is not compatible with your device, the manufacturer companion app (not measureQuick) determines hardware support. See Supported Smart Tools & Compatibility for the full list.
