Testing Two-Stage and Multi-Stage Systems (Why Only One Set of Gauges Shows)

If you connected two sets of probes to a two-stage or multi-circuit system but measureQuick only shows one set of readings, the app is working as designed: it displays one active stage at a time. To test staged equipment you profile the system with its number of stages, then switch between stages on screen. Each stage gets its own benchmark.

Multi-stage or multi-circuit?

Pick the mode that matches the equipment:

  • Multi-stage: one refrigeration circuit with a staged compressor (for example, a two-stage residential condenser). You switch the equipment between stages and capture each one.
  • Multi-circuit: multiple independent refrigeration circuits, each with its own compressor, common on rooftop units. Supports up to four circuits.

Set up the system profile

  1. Start your cooling project and open the System Profile.
  2. Set the number of stages (up to four).
  3. Enter the tonnage for each stage. Capacities add up: if stage 1 is two tons and stage 2 adds one ton, total active tonnage on stage 2 is three tons.
  4. Choose fixed or variable airflow:
    • Fixed: the blower moves full airflow regardless of stage (typical for rooftop units). measureQuick recalculates the target temperature split per stage.
    • Variable: airflow ramps with capacity, so first stage runs lower airflow than second stage.
  5. Set the target subcooling for each stage. The profile carries your stage 1 value over; change it per stage if the manufacturer specifies different targets.
  6. If the circuits hold different refrigerants (for example, a partial R-22 conversion on a multi-circuit unit), set the refrigerant per stage. measureQuick calculates superheat and subcooling for each refrigerant automatically.
  7. Submit the profile.

Run the test, one stage at a time

  1. On the home and measurement screens you will see the active stage (Stage 1, Stage 2, and so on). Tap the stage indicator to switch. This is why only one set of gauges shows at a time.
  2. With stage 1 active, let readings stabilize, capture your electrical measurements, and benchmark the stage.
  3. Switch to stage 2 (switch the equipment itself to second stage, or move to the next circuit). Your indoor and outdoor air probe data carries over; you do not need to move those probes.
  4. Electrical readings clear when you change stages, because each stage needs its own set. Capture electricals again for the new stage.
  5. Benchmark each stage. Benchmarks are stored independently per stage and sync to the cloud with the project.

Connecting many probes at once

On multi-circuit equipment you may run four high-side, four low-side, and multiple line temperature probes at once. Probes that broadcast (beacon) their readings, such as Fieldpiece probes, work best at high probe counts because the app can receive many tools simultaneously. Supply and return probes can be doubled up, and those readings are averaged.
