  • Role: Manager or Owner on the company account
  • NCI membership: An active NCI (National Comfort Institute) membership with Air Upgrade credentials
  • Equipment: An airflow measurement tool compatible with measureQuick (TrueFlow grid, powered flow hood, or equivalent)
  • Time: 10-15 minutes for initial setup

Background: What Is the NCI Air Upgrade?

NCI (National Comfort Institute) is a training and certification organization focused on HVAC performance. Their Air Upgrade program addresses a gap that standard commissioning often misses: duct system performance and room-by-room comfort delivery. Where a typical commissioning workflow focuses on refrigerant charge, electrical, and total system airflow, the NCI Air Upgrade adds testing at each register to verify that conditioned air actually reaches the rooms it is supposed to serve.

measureQuick integrates with the NCI Air Upgrade workflow to capture duct leakage, total airflow delivery, and room-by-room comfort delivery data alongside your standard diagnostic measurements. This gives you a single platform for both equipment diagnostics and air distribution verification.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Activate the NCI Air Upgrade Feature

The NCI Air Upgrade is available as a feature within Premier subscriptions.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Subscription
  2. Confirm your Premier subscription is active
  3. Go to Settings > Company Settings > Integrations
  4. Locate NCI Air Upgrade in the integrations list
  5. Tap Enable

If you do not see the NCI Air Upgrade option, confirm your app version is v3.5 or later and that your subscription tier is Premier.

Step 2: Enter NCI Credentials

  1. After enabling the integration, the app prompts for your NCI account details
  2. Enter your NCI Member ID
  3. Enter your Company Name as registered with NCI
  4. Tap Verify and Save

[Visual Reference] The NCI credentials screen shows fields for NCI Member ID and Company Name, with a Verify and Save button. Enter your details exactly as registered with NCI.

The company name here must match your NCI registration. This is separate from your measureQuick company profile name.

Step 3: Understand What NCI Air Measures

The NCI Air Upgrade workflow captures three categories of performance data:

Airflow Delivery

  • Total system airflow (CFM or SCFM) measured at the equipment
  • Comparison to the Manual J design airflow requirement
  • Percentage of design airflow delivered

Duct Leakage

  • Total duct leakage (supply and return)
  • Leakage as a percentage of total system airflow
  • Leakage to unconditioned spaces vs. conditioned spaces

Comfort Delivery

  • Room-by-room register airflow measurements
  • Each room's delivered airflow compared to its Manual J requirement
  • Identification of rooms receiving too much or too little air

These measurements supplement the standard measureQuick diagnostics (refrigerant charge, electrical, capacity) with the air distribution performance data that NCI's methodology emphasizes.

Step 4: Access the NCI Workflow in measureQuick

Once enabled, the NCI Air Upgrade appears as a workflow option when creating a new project.

  1. Tap New Project from the home screen
  2. Select the NCI Air Upgrade workflow type (or select a standard workflow and add the NCI Air Upgrade module)
  3. Complete the system profile as usual, including equipment nameplate data
  4. The workflow now includes additional steps for duct leakage testing and room-by-room register measurements

The NCI-specific steps appear after the standard equipment diagnostics steps. You can complete the standard diagnostics first, then proceed to the airflow distribution testing.

Step 5: Review Data Flow Between Systems

Data captured during an NCI Air Upgrade test flows in both directions:

  • measureQuick to NCI: Total system airflow, duct leakage results, room-by-room register measurements, and equipment identification are shared with your NCI account for certification and reporting purposes
  • NCI to measureQuick: NCI design targets and room requirements populate within the measureQuick workflow when available

Reports generated from NCI Air Upgrade projects include both the standard measureQuick diagnostics and the NCI airflow distribution results in a single document.

Tips & Common Issues

I do not see the NCI Air Upgrade option in workflow selection

Confirm the integration is enabled under Settings > Company Settings > Integrations. Also verify your app is updated to v3.5 or later and your Premier subscription is active.

My NCI credentials are not verifying

The Member ID and company name must match your NCI registration exactly. Check for trailing spaces or differences in capitalization. If the issue persists, confirm your NCI membership is current by contacting NCI directly.

Can technicians access NCI workflows without being NCI-certified?

Yes. NCI Air Upgrade is enabled at the company level. Any team member can run the workflow once it is activated. However, NCI may require certified personnel for official NCI certification documentation.

How does NCI Air Upgrade differ from standard airflow testing in measureQuick?

Standard measureQuick airflow testing captures total system airflow and evaluates it against design specifications. The NCI Air Upgrade adds duct leakage quantification and room-by-room register measurements, providing a complete picture of where conditioned air actually goes after it leaves the equipment.

Do I need specific tools for duct leakage testing?

Duct leakage testing typically requires a duct leakage tester or blower door adapted for duct testing. Consult NCI's equipment requirements for their Air Upgrade program. measureQuick supports data entry from compatible airflow measurement devices.
